Hornsby rocked New Hampshire!! It was a beautiful night for an open air concert. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones opened the show with an amazing display of musicianship. In fact, Bruce sat in for 3 or 4 songs. They provided the perfect warm up for the evening.
Just as night settled in, Bruce and company took the stage (9:15ish). Mother nature was also participating in the show by providing us with a display of power and beauty. On the left side of the stage, some large ominous clouds lurked in the distance. Just as the band got busy with Talk of the Town, these clouds began to light up with a wonderful display of heat lightning and a few large bolts. As the show progressed, the cloud front slowly advanced toward us and grew along with the energy of the crowd.
My wife and I were really digging the atmosphere at Meadowbrook Farms. It was our first time there and first Hornsby show. We truly enjoyed the second song, China Doll, because Harbor Lights is one of our favorite albums. Bela joined the boys on stage for the next couple songs. Bruce was inspired to trade licks with his old friend. The Way It Is was excellent w/ Bela's Banjo picking. My wife was extremely excited to hear Burn Down the Mission, being a huge Elton John fan. That merged beautifully into King of the Hill, one of my favorites. Then Cruise Control really got the place rocking.
About this time, on the right side of the stage, mother nature provided us with a full moon rising into a clear indigo sky filled with stars. Of course Bruce provided us with a Dead tune, after consulting the band for a minute. Scarlet Begonias ignited the crowds' dancing feet and the place was really hopping. This mood continued into Jacob's Ladder with Bela back on the banjo.
About this time Bruce mentioned the ever impending 11pm curfew. He took it down a notch and broke into Fortune Son with a Comfortably Numb filler. My wife and I decided to beat feet about this time. We wanted to make it home at a decent hour to relieve the babysitter. She is going to kill me when I tell her they did Mandolin Rain for an encore.
