Venue: Gilford, NH .. August 4 2001
Cosmic Chris was also at Meadowbrook Farm to share these:
Meadowbrook Farm is a great place to see a show!!!! It is right near beautiful Lake Winnepesaukee, in a wooded location, with easy in and out parking! The lawn seats have an ample view of the stage, they have a full bar and clean bathrooms! The show was not sold out, which may be why it seemed so "comfortable"... but I'd definitely visit this venue again! We stayed in a cheesey little motel nearby and checked out scenic Franconia Notch the following day. There is a rock formation there called the old man of the mountain, and he was very impressive, looming over the highway.
Bruce asked the same question I did: "Why is it called Meadowbrook Farms?" He had some speculation about a farmer named Rudy growing rhutabagas, but I think it was a farm before it was a venue! (;
I don't have a setlist for the Bela Fleck & The Flecktones portion of the show, as I really don't know all their songs, but I am tempted to learn a lot more of them after this show. They were phenomenal! They played the first set, with Bruce joining in on several songs, and played from 7 - 8:40. Bruce and Bela were complimenting each other and joking, there was a lot of camraderie going on! Bruce's set started at 9:15 and went until shortly after 11:00. He commented that the time had flown by, and would have continued to play if not for the 11:00 curfew. Why do they set these deadlines on a Saturday night??!!
Anyways, I will set the scene for you: Bruce on stage, ditching the polyester pants he wore at Count Basey theatre for blue jeans, violent lightning going off to the left throughout the entire show, but never coming close enough for us to get wet, a gorgeous full moon rising to the right of the stage, laid back, fun, people left and right....and.....here's the setlist:
Big Rumble
China Doll*
Barber's Nocturne*
Way It Is*
Jam *
Way it is*
Lost Soul
Tiny Dancer Tease
Burn Down The Mission
King of the Hill
Cruise Control
Show Goes On
Scarlet Begonias
Jacob's Ladder*
What A Time (one line tease)*
Bluegrass Jam*
Fortunate Son
Comfortably Numb
Fortunate Son
Valley Road
Encore: Mandolin Rain
(*w/Bela Fleck)
Bruce was definitely in a noodling mood Saturday night!!! He kept spontaneously jamming out and I couldn't keep track of what he was playing, but much of it had a bluegrass tone and there were many traces of Turkey in the Straw. I thought I was going to pop when he started singing What a Time, but then he forgot all about that during his bluegrass jam!
My only "complaint" is that for an outdoor venue it would be preferrable to hear some really high energy stuff, because there was noone there to tell you to sit down and stop dancing like there sometimes are in the theatre settings...and of course, it could have been longer, but all in all this was an EXCELLENT Bruuuce experience!!! I have a sticker on my truck that says Bruuuce, and while it's typically sold to Springsteen fans, it makes me think of your web page! (:
Have a Good One!
