Venue: Morristown, NJ .. April 12 1999
Thanks to Cary Tenenbaum for the following review of the above show:
Last night I had the very enjoyable experience of seeing and hearing Bruce Hornsby work his musical magic. He is a musician who so enjoys what he does that it is contagious. His songs are melodic, upbeat and his lyrics filled with hope and love and good vibes. The man is very together.
He is also a walking juke box, filling his sets not only with his own material, but songs by Ray Charles, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, The Grateful Dead, James Brown and more.
The show was broken into two sets and lasted about 3 hours of playing time. It went like this:
7:30pm
- I Will Walk With You " Everything comes and goes. You try to believe, but you never know. Anyway the wind blows somewhere sometime I will walk with you".
- Fields of Gray "in the dim light I say in my own small way, i will try, I will try to help you through" - ->
- Under The Boardwalk (since we're in Jersey)
Apparently a tradition at Hornsby shows is that he takes requests, people were bringing up pieces of paper. I told my buddy Adam, I'd like to hear Terrapin and Adam said, I have a pencil, I should write it down and bring it up..the next song was:
- Terrapin -> (excellent version with Bruce singing the whole song )
- Across The River
- White Wheeled Limousine
- Turkey In The Straw
- I Shall Be Released
- Walk In The Sun
- The Changes
- (Your Love Is Lifting me) Higher and Higher
Intermission
Solo Piano:
- Fortunate Son
- Tupelo Honey
- Girl From North Country
- Madman Across The Water
- Instrumental (?)
With Band again:
- The End of The Innocence
- Rainbows Cadillac->
Bruce encourages everyone to dance. When not enough people do, while the rest of the band is jamming to Rainbows, Bruce jumps down into the orchestra and starts to dance with the crowd. Everyone else gets up and boogies from this point on. Bruce jumps back up on stage and segues the band from Rainbows Cadillac right into a rousing:
-> Franklin's Tower !! Quite excellent!!
- Country Doctor
- Let's Go Get Stoned
- Swing Street
- Sex Machine
- Cruise Control
Encore: The Way It Is
10:45pm
I highly recommend catching these guys if you can.
