The Board

Venue: PNC Arts Center, NJ .. August 31 1999

Thanks to Cary Tenenbaum for this terrific review of the show, part of the '99 "Sensitive Ones" tour:

What a great way to end the summer. Two of our all time favorites Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt and two of our newer all time faves Bruce Hornsby and Shawn Colvin. It's all relative, we've only been into Bruce and Shawan for 10 - 15 years while Bonnie and Jackson go back to the 70's, 20 plus .. I can't believe I'm saying it in years.

It was a cool late summer evening, we brought sweatshirts, unlike the sweltering heat in late July for the Dylan and Simon show. The show was set to start at 7:30, so at 7:20 the usual PNC pre-recorded message. Please rise for the National Anthem. One of the strange customs at this NJ venue. But tonight, instead of the canned anthem, we got Bruce Hornsby on the piano doing the most amazing jazzy but still reverential and patriotic version I have ever heard. A very good sign!

Next Mr. Dave..David Lindley and Wally Ingram took the stage and played three or four obscure but excellent blues numbers. Lindley played a lap slide guitar and a bosouki(?) and was his usual amazing self, Wally plays various drums and percussion instruments. They did Minglewood Blues and a song about the backstage food called Cat Food Sandwiches. Check out their website: http://www.davidlindley.com/

As soon as they finished their set of about 15- 20 mins Jackson Browne came right on stage and he and Lindley did a duet with David playing fiddle on: 1 EVERYWHERE I GO

Then the rest of the band including Wally and another drummer, a guitar player, a bass player, the organ/keyboard player from Hornsby's band and Bruce, Bonnie and Shawn join Jackson and Lindley and they go into: 2 DOWN THE ROAD TONIGHT

Shawn leads the band through: 3 YOU AND THE MONA LISA

Jackson steps off stage and Bonnie, Bruce ( on accordion) and Shawn do a stellar: 4 DIMMING OF THE DAY

Jackson comes back, Lindley on pedal steel shoots it out with Bonnie on slide on: 5 THING CALLED LOVE !!!!

Jackson takes front and center, leading the gang thru: 6 THE BARRICADES OF HEAVEN

Then just Jackson and Bonnie due a duet version of: 7 WORLD IN MOTION

Next a Shawn song as a duet with Jackson 8 WITCHITA SKYLINE (Jackson sings a couple of lines from Witchita Lineman )

A favorite Bruce song is next with everyone singing and jamming:: 9 RAINBOW'S CADILLAC 9 KING OF THE HILL Bruce plays amazing piano solos in this revamped version and Bonnie and Shawn do square dances and other assorted shenanigans.

10 THE FACTS ABOUT JIMMY (Shawn)

11 SUNNY CAME HOME (Shawn)

12 NICK OF TIME (Bonnie on the piano )

13 I BELIEVE I'M IN LOVE (Bonnie leads the whole group through this Fabulous rocker)

14 THE NEXT VOICE YOU HEAR (Jackson & Shawn very nice, much better than the CD)

14 YOUR BRIGHT BABY BLUES (Jackson leads everyone through this amazing version of an amazing song)

15 THE TIDE WILL RISE (Bruce takes over again with his great song)

16 SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT

17 SHOTGUN DOWN THE AVALANCHE (Very hot Shawn )

At this point they had been playing for over two hours with no signs of letting up. Everyone was helping out in one way or another on everyone else's songs. Various combinations of two and three and all four. David Lindley playing amazing slide, fiddle and every kinda stringed instrument. Hornsby seemed to be the most adventerous, completely rearranging many of his songs and letting the others sing entire verses rather than just background vocals. Next an extended piano solo into -> 18 THE WAY IT IS

Now Jackson gets it up again and the girls love it for 19 THE PRETENDER

Now Bonnie makes the boys dream on 20 I CAN'T MAKE YOU LOVE ME

Shawn is not a: 21 DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

Bruce again: 22 WHITE WHEELED LIMOUSINE

Back to Bonnie: 23 LOVE SNEAKIN' UP ON YOU

Jackson rocks us: 24 RUNNIN' ON EMPTY Now we're up to THREE hours, I figured we'd get one encore..No no....

25 THE VALLEY ROAD (Bluegrass all acoustic , everyone singing GREAT!)

26 POLAROIDS (Beautiful ) 27 MERCURY BLUES (Bonnie and Lindley dual again blazing slides, everyone sings a verse, this has gotta be on the Live CD they had better release!!)

28 END OF THE INNOCENCE (Totally revamped acoustic version ) This seemed like it was going to be it, they all stood center stage and took bows, taking off their guitars..then Jackson looks at Bruce and nods OK, Bruce sits down at the piano and starts playing a familiar melody..not a Bruce song..not a Bonnie song, not a Shawn song or a Jackson song..." When the last rose of summer pricks your finger...." I'll tell ya, it warmed my heart that Bruce Hornsby could get these folks to all sing four part harmony on a favorite Grateful Dead song: 29 BLACK MUDDY RIVER was the absolutely perfect closer to 3 and 1/2 hours and a wonderful evening of great music.

If they're playing near you..go see 'em. If not, petition the record company to put out a Live CD, this group was too good to be true..but it was.
