I was encouranged by Ann Hornsby to go to VA to see the "Symphony Show", no arm twisting needed there :o) Thanks, Ann!
The venue is along the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth, VA. We had seats in the tented pavillion, but my dat machine enjoyed those accommodations, Sue and I chose to dance in the back on the lawn under the evening sky. The entire day was very hot and humid and threatened rain, a few sprinkles found there way to us, but just as Bruce took the stage, the rain subsided and hid away the rest of the night :o) There were flashes of lightning off in the distance which made for a nice lightshow!
Red Plains was full of sound with the orchestral background, and RS began his solo playing early on. Bruce went into the "present era of music" with Great Divide which was a killler--it started out with a sweetly flowing Bruce piano jam, then went into a smouldering Bobby, then RS jam, and ended with a driving "Sargeant Collier on the bass" JV jam. WOW!!! The Tide Will Rise was emotionally evoking as it just tore at my heartstrings, the symphony, JT, RS, and Bobby each playing solos.....then, Bobby was at it again, with an intense solo during End of the Innocense... This was the beginning of an energetic dancing night :o) Bruce went back to his storytelling of old neighborhood days, with "Long Tall Cool One" written for his "nameless to protect the guilty" friend, and again, Bobby played another steaming solo, at which time, Bruce attached another name to Bobby's many....."BLT"! Mandolin Rain>Black Muddy>Mandolin Rain brought tears to my eyes, Doug's mandolin came alive.....RS brought forth to us a chilling jam......They ended the set with White Wheeled Limo which was full of energy and smoldering jams...
The second set started out with a beautiful "China Doll", it was exquisite sound with the symphony and Bruce's classical piano licks! Great dancing and energy with Valley Road, Way It Is (symphony left after WII), Rainbow's, Big Rumble (another great RS jam on the wawa), and Jacob's Ladder (yeehaw-go Bruce, Bonny & JV!) I was stunned to hear the "thank you and goodnight", ugh, it was all too quickly at an end. The night was purely "tempus fugit"..... but the double encore made up for it...the Sunflower Cat>Takes Train to Cry>Sunflower rocked, then Bruce & band came back on for a second encore of "The Show Goes On", and go on it did :o) It was a sweet ending to a steaming night!
This was a very special night for me....it was six years ago that we had met Bruce, and what a more appropriate way to spend this night. I was lucky enough to meet his mom after the show, and thank her for sharing her son with all of us :o) Thank you, again, Bruce! It was well worth the drive!
