Lance Hull enjoyed his first Bruce show, and was kind enough to send this in:

In finding myself up in Michigan after a great CSN show, I did some research and found that Bruce Hornsby and the boys was going to be at Sterling Heights a couple days afterwards. I then forked over some cash and it was set in stone, my first Bruce show.

I arrived at Freedom Hill 3 hours early, hoping to find a kind scene of folks. My Hyundai was the only car in the park lot. Only 15 minutes went by and two kind cats parked beside me. We broke the ice by playing some mad frisbee and knocking down a good amount of Bass Ale. We came to the conclusion that we were Shakedown Street.

After getting our game faces on, we made our way to the "Hill." The "Hill" is a very small initmate venue. I believe it holds near 5000 people. I believe it's one been in existence for one year now. My friends I met informed me that was it built on a landfill. I thought man, I hope the methane level are not high, or this place would erupt. If anyone see's Bruce at the "Hill" keep in mind they give 2 free complimentary tickets away when you buy a program. Imagine that!

When the music started, I knew why I had came. Bruce is such an amazing entertainer. His voice, piano and accordian talents are simply marvelous. He open up with a sound King of the Hill. He also put some raps (i.g. King of the Hill, Freedom Hill.) He mentioned that Detroit was JV's home town. JV came out with a fake purple afro. He was definitely on it that night. There were some nice segues in King of the Hill, some were Big Boss Man, Long Black Veil, and Mystery Train. The crowd really got a hop in their steo when Bruce and the boys played a smoking version of White Wheeled Limousine. The also played the ever present Fortunate Son->Comfortably Numb->Fortunate Son of the tour. They did a splendid job on it. Then I got hear the song I wanted to ever since last year's TOO's show. Loser! Bruce has this song down to a science. It was stellar. I was kind of depressed to hear that he only had time for a short encore. But what an encore it was. The beautful Mandolin Rain right into the tear jerking Black Muddy River.

The only thing that erupted that night was Bruce and the boys. I can say after my first show, that I am now a dedicated follower.

Stay on the bus, Lancers
