David Mansfield is a multifaceted musician, composer, and producer, best known for his work in film soundtracks and collaborations with iconic artists. Born on September 13, 1956, David has had a rich career, with his musical journey beginning at a young age. He was a violin prodigy and quickly expanded his skills to other instruments such as the mandolin, dobro, and pedal steel guitar, which helped him carve a unique niche in the music industry.
David Mansfield and Bruce Hornsby
David first gained significant attention in the mid-1970s as a member of Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue, where his instrumental versatility shone. Following his time with Dylan, Mansfield joined Bruce Hornsby and the Range and was instrumental in shaping the band’s folk-influenced sound. In Bruuuce.com’s 2001 interview with David, he recalled how he met Bruce through a mutual musician friend, noting how his fiddle and mandolin playing aligned well with Bruce’s vision of blending folk elements with rock.
Mansfield’s contributions to the world of film soundtracks are equally impressive. Over the years, he composed scores for over two dozen films, including theatrical releases, network TV movies, and cable features. Some of his most recognized work includes scoring films like Heaven’s Gate (1980) and The Apostle (1997). His role in Songcatcher (2000), where he provided overall music direction and composed the score, stands out as one of his significant projects. The film focused on traditional Appalachian folk music, and the soundtrack featured contributions from notable artists like Dolly Parton, Gillian Welch, and Emmylou Harris.
Despite his success in film, Mansfield never fully stepped away from live performance. He balanced composing with recording and performing, continuing to make records and play live concerts. He notes “The Way It Is” as a song that holds a special place in his heart.
In addition to his work with Bob Dylan and Bruce Hornsby, Mansfield has collaborated with a wide array of musicians and bands. Some of his other notable collaborations include playing with Johnny Cash, Roger McGuinn and T-Bone Burnett.
