Scott Flavin biography
Scott Flavin maintains a busy and versatile career, conducting classical symphonies, accompanying renowned jazz stars, and premiering new works. He has recently been appointed Resident Conductor for the prestigious Symphony of the Americas and is also the Resident Conductor for The Henry Mancini Institute.
Conducting
Flavin has appeared on the podium with diverse artists such as soprano Denyce Graves, the Beach Boys, violinist Joseph Silverstein, jazz pianist Chick Corea, and composer Dave Grusin, among many others. His conducting experience includes summer festivals like FAME’S Institute in Macedonia, the Pine Mountain Music Festival, and the University of New Hampshire’s Summer Youth Music School. He has also conducted at the Eastern Music Festival, where he teaches alongside renowned conductor Gerard Schwarz.
His nationally broadcast conducting debut occurred in January 2014 for the PBS television special “Jazz and the Philharmonic.” Recently, he conducted the Mancini Institute Orchestra at the Library of Congress in September 2024.
Educational background
Born and raised in Boston, Flavin received his early musical training before attending the Eastman School of Music. An avid educator, he is a Professor of Violin, Chamber Music, and Orchestral Conducting at the University of Miami Frost School of Music.
Violin career
In addition to his conducting work, Scott Flavin enjoys a multi-faceted violin career as a chamber musician, orchestral concertmaster, soloist, and pedagogue. He is a member of the Bergonzi Piano Trio and PULSE Trio and currently serves as concertmaster of the Symphony of the Americas. Previously, he was the long-time concertmaster for the Florida Grand Opera and Miami City Ballet and has performed as concertmaster and soloist with artists including Luciano Pavarotti, Itzhak Perlman, and Lena Horne.
Flavin is consistently engaged in concert activities around the world, most recently serving as guest concertmaster for the Orquestra Simfònica de les Illes Balears in Mallorca, Spain. He is also a frequent judge for major competitions, including the 2023 Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition, the 2022 Frost Piano Concerto Competition, and the 2023 John Oliveira String Competition.
