Overview of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music

The Frost School of Music at the University of Miami has its roots in the university’s founding in 1926, originally operating as the University of Miami School of Music until 2003. Today, the school boasts an enrollment of over 700 students and offers a wide array of degree programs, including instrumental performance, vocal performance, music engineering, music therapy, music education, music composition, and musical theatre. Additionally, it provides degrees in Studio Music and Jazz for both instrumentalists and vocalists, with the Studio Music and Jazz program consistently ranking among the best in the nation. The Frost School of Music was also a pioneer in offering a degree in Music Business and Entertainment Industries, along with a hands-on music therapy program.

Academic programs

The bachelor of arts in music program at the Frost School allows students to major in music while pursuing a liberal arts minor, making it a popular option for those seeking to double major, particularly in pre-medical, pre-veterinary, pre-dental, and pre-law studies. Non-music majors can also pursue a minor in music. Students majoring in various fields have the option to minor in areas such as studio music and jazz, music composition, music business and entertainment industries, and dance. The school also offers graduate programs across all music disciplines.

Leadership and contributions

In April 2007, Shelly Berg, an accomplished pianist, composer, arranger, orchestrator, and producer, was appointed dean of the Frost School of Music, succeeding James William Hipp.

Special programs

The Frost School is home to the Bruce Hornsby Creative American Music Program, named after alumnus Bruce Hornsby, who graduated in 1977. This interdisciplinary program aims to develop artists and songwriters by immersing them in the diverse traditions that underpin modern American songwriting. In 2019, the Dean’s Suite at the Frost School of Music was named after Japanese rock star Yoshiki, following a masterclass he conducted for Frost students and his generous charitable donation to the school.
