Jonathan Richards, praised for his “beautiful tone, lyricism, and superb dynamic shadings” by the *Virginia Pilot*, has built a distinguished career as a violinist. Originally from Illinois, he has won numerous competitions and performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Kishwaukee Symphony, the Orchestra of St. Vincent’s of Chicago, the Judson College Symphony, and the University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra.
Orchestral and solo performances
Jonathan has made a significant impact as both a chamber musician and soloist across the United States and Canada. His orchestral career includes regular performances with the Fairfax Symphony, Annapolis Symphony, Alexandria Symphony, Chesapeake Symphony, and National Philharmonic. He is also currently the Assistant Principal Second Violin of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra. His performances have received acclaim, with *The Washington Post* lauding him for “bringing real drama” to his performances.
Chamber music and recording
Jonathan is an avid chamber musician, having been a founding member of the Adelphi String Quartet and a member of the Excelsa Quartet. His performances with the VERGE ensemble, the Grammy-nominated Inscape Chamber Orchestra, and the New Music Ensemble of Towson have earned him recognition in Washington, DC’s new music scene. As a recording artist, Jonathan has recorded Walter Gieseking’s works for string quartet and string trio for the Naxos label with the Adelphi Quartet. He has also recorded world premieres for the Sono Luminus label with the Inscape Chamber Orchestra.
Educational contributions
Alongside his performance career, Jonathan Richards is dedicated to education. He serves on the faculty of the Governor’s School for the Arts, where he teaches music theory and coaches chamber ensembles, contributing to the next generation of musicians.
