Hideaki Aomori is one of the most experienced and versatile woodwind musicians of his generation. Based in Los Angeles, he plays the clarinet, saxophone, and flute, and has toured and recorded with many singer-songwriters and bands at the forefront of popular music today, including Paul Simon, Bon Iver, Ben Folds, Bruce Hornsby, John Legend, and Sufjan Stevens.

Classical training and achievements
Trained in both jazz and classical music, Hideaki has performed both written and improvised works at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, and Madison Square Garden. He has collaborated with acclaimed ensembles, such as Alarm Will Sound, The Knights, and the Philip Glass Ensemble. As a founding member of yMusic, a six-person chamber ensemble recognized by NPR for shaping the future of classical music, he has premiered over 50 new works. His solo albums feature clarinet music by composers like Brahms and Mendelssohn. Hideaki holds a Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance from the Juilliard School and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from Stony Brook University.
Jazz experience
In addition to his classical training, Hideaki has extensive experience as a jazz saxophonist. Mentored by the late jazz pianist Sir Roland Hanna, he toured and recorded extensively in the United States and Japan. His jazz record, “Glue,” showcases original compositions and arrangements. Recent collaborations include work with Ambrose Akinmusire and the funk band Scary Pockets.
Contributions to commercial music
Aomori has contributed to various Broadway shows, including “Ghost” and “Matilda,” and has worked in his home recording studio since moving to LA. His contributions to film include playing bassclarinet on Son Lux’s “Yesterday’s Wake EP” and performing a tenor sax solo in the Oscar-nominated film “If Beale Street Could Talk.”
