Blackstreet is an influential American R&B group formed in 1991 by renowned record producers Chauncey “Black” Hannibal and Teddy Riley. The group experienced commercial success with four albums released under Interscope Records between 1994 and 2003. Their breakout hit came in 1996 with the single “No Diggity,” featuring Dr. Dre and Queen Pen, which dominated the Billboard Hot 100 for four consecutive weeks.
Blackstreet made their debut in 1993 with the release of “Baby Be Mine,” featured on the soundtrack for the Universal Pictures comedy CB4, starring Chris Rock. The track was written by Teddy Riley and Joe Stonestreet.
The group’s self-titled debut album, “Blackstreet”, included popular singles such as “Booti Call,” “Before I Let You Go,” and “Joy.” Both “Booti Call” and “Before I Let You Go” achieved Top 40 success, with the latter reaching the Top 10. Their second album, *Another Level*, released in 1996, marked a significant breakthrough, primarily due to the success of “No Diggity,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1996. In 1998, Blackstreet was awarded the Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
Commercial Success
“Another Level” went on to achieve quadruple platinum status in the United States and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard chart. The song “No Diggity” was later ranked No. 91 in Rolling Stone and MTV’s list of the 100 Greatest Pop Songs. The lineup for “Another Level” included Mark Middleton and Eric Williams, who replaced original members Dave Hollister and Levi Little. Middleton had previously been part of the Motown group Brik Citi, while Williams was a member of the trio The Flex, known for collaborating with producer Marley Marl.
