Z Berg overview

Elizabeth Anne “Z” Berg, born on June 28, 1986, is an accomplished American musician known for her dynamic contributions to indie rock. As a founding member, guitarist, and lead vocalist of the band the Like, she began her musical journey at the age of 15. Berg is the daughter of Tony Berg, a former Geffen Records A&R executive and record producer.

Musical evolution

After the Like went on hiatus in 2011, Berg formed JJAMZ with James Valentine (Maroon 5), Jason Boesel (Bright Eyes/Rilo Kiley), Alex Greenwald (Phantom Planet), and Michael Runion. Their debut album, “Suicide Pact”, was released on July 10, 2012. Following Valentine’s departure, the band was rebranded as Phases, releasing “For Life” on September 18, 2015. Music critic Dan Cairns has described Berg’s voice as reminiscent of “Björk meets Harriet Wheeler.”

Solo projects

In 2018, Z Berg released several solo tracks, including “I Fall For the Same Face Every Time” and “Time Flies,” the latter of which she also directed the music video for. She continued to showcase her talent with the release of “All Out of Tears” later that year. In December 2018, she collaborated with Ryan Ross on the Christmas single “The Bad List.”

The following year, she embarked on “The Dead End Kids Club” tour alongside Ryan Ross, Dan Keyes, and Palm Springsteen. Berg released her debut solo album, “Get Z to a Nunnery”, in July 2020, followed by the original motion picture soundtrack for “Strange Darling” in 2024, further establishing her as a multifaceted artist in the music industry.
